Development in Action
Over the past 40 years, life expectancy at birth in developing countries
has increased by 20 years - about as much as was achieved in all of human history prior to the middle of the 20th century.
Over the past 30 years, adult illiteracy in the developing world has
been cut nearly in half.
Over the past 20 years, the absolute number of people living on less
than $1 a day has for the first time begun to fall, after rising steadily for the last 200 years, even as the world's population
has grown by 1.6 billion.
Driving much of this progress has been an acceleration of growth rates
in the developing world - more than doubling the income of the average person living in developing countries over the past
35 years.
A Fund To Improve the Lives of the Earth’s
Poorest People
The International
Development Association (IDA) plays a key role in supporting the World Bank’s poverty reduction mission. IDA helps the
earth’s poorest countries by providing interest-free loans and grants for programs aimed at boosting economic growth
and improving living conditions. IDA complements the World Bank’s other lending arm—the International Bank for
Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)—which serves middle-income countries with capital investment and advisory services

The Mixed Prospects of Indonesia (The New York
Times)
Indonesian government is rebuffing criticism from international donors
even as it approaches them for $4.8 billion in assistance; meeting with Consultative Group on Indonesia comes against backdrop
of further decline in Indonesian political stability that has unnerved investors further and left many wondering if government
is able to salvage what has become worst-performing economy in region; questions from International Monetary Fund and World
Bank about government plan to take over country's largest corporate debtor have provoked angry remarks from Indonesian officials,
who accuse international lenders of favoritism and interference; Japanese finance ministry officials repeatedly favor keeping
noneconomic issues out of discussions
UNICEF: Early childhood care key to gender equalityCAIRO, 13 November 2006 –
UNICEF today called on governments and others committed to universal education and gender equality to remember that the earliest
years are the most critical for children’s development. If many of the Millennium Development Goals are to be reached,
the children’s agency warned, the cycle of negative gender stereotypes must be broken earlier in a child's life rather
than later.

Lombok Island
Lombok has a different feel from Bali due in part to the Balinese
being Hindu while the people of Lombok are predominantly Moslem. Dominated by one of the highest mountains in Indonesia, Lombok
Island has a unique charm and is famous for its hand woven textiles, distinctive pottery and miles of undisturbed beaches.
Mataram, the island's capital is a quaint town still plied by little pony cart taxis. The island offers the visitor lush mountain
forests for trekking, beautiful secluded beaches with magnificent coral reefs and crystal clear water. During festival times,
you will see cultural dancers, temple ceremonies and colorful processions.

Indonesia tests tsunami warning
system
Indonesia's resort island of Bali held a tsunami warning
drill on one of its most famous beaches.
It was three weeks after earthquake-spawned waves killed more than 600 people
on neighbouring Java.
"We live in the front line if a tsunami comes, so this drill is very useful,'' said Ketut Joka,
owner of a seafood restaurant at Jimbaran beach.
Indonesia was the worst hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami and has vowed
to install a nationwide alert system by 2009.
